BRIT School for Performing Arts and Technology: More Than a Dance School

The BRIT School for Performing Arts and Technology is also known as The London School for Performing Arts & Technology. It is Britain’s only free school for technology and the performing arts. Brit School is state-funded and the only one with this thrust of supporting music and the performance arts, media, art and design that makes high-caliber performance possible for everyone who has the talent and interest to pursue a career in performance arts.

BRIT which stands for the British Record Industry Trust, the school’s primary sponsor, has produced the finest musicians and performers that have conquered the international music arena. Some of these music greats are Amy Winehouse, Leona Lewis, Kate Nash, Lynden David Hall, and Dan Gillespie Sells and Richard Jones who are the lead singer and bassist of The Feeling. The list also includes Kelly O’Keefe and Sheila Armstrong who are singers of Deuce.

The state-funded school was founded in 1991 by the City Technology Colleges (CTC) program. The school has been registered as charity under the English Law.

BRIT school observes a systematic process for its curriculum. The Key Stage 4 Group makes up the 10 to 11 years. This is where the national curriculum subjects are linked to the arts through themes, projects, and subjects while the Post 16 group is where the students are grouped according to their main artistic inclination, be that music, dance, media, musical theatre, art and design, and production and theatre.

In BRIT, all students are expected to finish full courses in a designated time, just the same as in any school. They all apply by joining competitive auditions and some would require entrance tests.

The concept behind BRIT School of Performing Arts and Technology is different from the rest of the world’s dance schools. As its principal said, “It is not a stage or fame school.” It is a vocational school for students who are devoted to arts and want to pursue a lifelong career in performance arts. This alone makes it a noble endeavor.

The BRIT School for Performing Arts and Technology provides a highly academic orientation and perspective to performance arts.
